Scarlett Rocourt, I’m a Haitian born Jersey Girl

  • What is your Instagram name? (We promise to limit our creeping.)
    @WonderCurl

  • What do you do and how long have you been in your field?
I am the creator of Wonder Curl, a line of products for curly and natural hair. I’ve been  in business for just over 5 years.

  • What is your favorite thing about your job?
I love interacting with my customers and new customers, especially when they learn how the products can transform their hair and they’re so happy. It’s what keeps me going.

  • Have you always been natural? If not, when did you start your journey and how (i.e., big chop or transition)?
I used to chemically straighten my hair. My first relaxer was when I was 13 and I big chopped just after I graduated from college at 21. I grew my hair out for 6 months and then went to my stylist and told her I was ready. That day, seeing my curly hair for the first time, I felt like I was ‘ME’ for the first time.

  • What is your hair type?
The curl patterns fall between 3B & 3C.

  • Describe your hair in three words.
    thick, frizzy, defiant

  • How much time do you spend on your hair each day during the work week?
Now that my hair is short, I wash it every other day. It takes me 20 minutes total and I love it!

  • How much time do you spend on your hair over the weekend?
    20 minutes, that’s it.

  • Do you have a night time routine? If so, what is it?
With my hair short, I just go to sleep. When it was long, I used to put it into 3 big braids at night to maintain my wash-n-go.

  • What is your “go-to” hairstyle for work?
Usually a wash-n-go. I’m not that adventurous with my hair.

  • Tell us your #1 absolutely-cannot-live-without-it haircare product.
That’s a tough one. All the products are amazing and need each other. But, if I was on a deserted island and can only take one item, it would be my new Nourish Hair Balm. It locks in moisture like no body’s business, slicks my edges and gives me a soft Afro.

  • If you had to give one of these things up for your hair for a month, which one would you choose: Healthy Hair, Style Versatility, or Convenience?
    Style Versatility

  • If you could switch careers for a day, what would you do?
I’d want to be an actor. I think the idea of being someone else (and getting paid for it) is kinda cool.

  • Do you have any Corporate Kinks hair crushes? (Come on,  you can tell us.)
Shelly of Hairscapades is a good friend and has lust-worthy hair.

  • Do you have any unique SFW (safe-for-work) hair advice for other naturals in your field?
I’ve been lucky, I worked in fashion and technology where being different was either encouraged or not noticed. I had green hair for a summer and no one batted an eyelash.
For those naturals in more conservative fields, it’s all about finding that balance between style and what your employer expects. When I had my ‘in-between’ hair, I used my Get Set Hair Jelly to keep my curls defined without the frizz or getting too big.
